Camp provides children with the option to try new activities.  What else can your kids gain from summer camp?

1)  Summer camp provides children a variety of opportunities to develop necessary life skills.

Summer camp enhances skills such as communication, cooperation, imagination, leadership, socialization, and problem-solving.  Children learn to figure out how to solve problems on their own which enhances their self-esteem and is important to a child’s development and well-being.  Working through their fears, resolving their issues, and celebrating successes together will help them as they grow to adults. 2) Camp prepares kids to succeed in group settings.

Camp environments allow kids to learn social cues as well as real-life lessons that center on community and cultural interactions. Children build problem-solving skills by being part of a supportive and team building community by working together through camp activities.  Often in large groups, kids have to rely on each other to win games and finish projects – even though they’ve just met.

3) Camp gives kids a break from screen time.
American Academy of Pediatrics(AAP) has established recommendations for children’s media use. The current recommendations advise:
  • For children under 18 months, avoid screen-based media except video chatting.

  • For children 18 months to 24 months, parents should choose high-quality programming and watch with their children.
  • For children 2 to 5, limit screen time to one hour per day of high-quality programming.
  • For children 6 and up, establish consistent limits on the time spent using media and the types of media.

When kids are enrolled in camp, they spend less time as couch potatoes.  The AAP also recommends a minimum of 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity each day that gets kids breathing hard and sweaty.  Physical activity improves strength and endurance, builds healthy bones and lean muscles, develops motor skills and coordination, reduces fat, and promotes emotional well-being.   Benefits of summer camp

4) Camp allows children to develop real-life friendships.
Studies suggest that children who find it difficult to connect in social situations spend more time on the screens than interacting with friends in present situations.  Camps allow your child to develop social skills and encourage lifelong friendships.

5) Camp makes space for children to enjoy playtime

Creating a mix of free play and structured time helps kids build an array of skills and feel more balanced in their everyday lives. Playtime enhances children social and emotional development.

6) Camp allows a child to reinvent themselves.

During the school year, children are frequently labeled by their peers.  One child may be animated in one setting and quiet in another setting. Children who attend summer camps meet an entire group of children in a different environment.  Most often, a child will reinvent themselves at camp and be themselves. This teaches the child, confidence, and self-esteem.

7) Camp promotes independence.

Camp allows the child to grow more independent.  When a child is not with their parents, the child learns to rely on himself and to trust other adults and peers.  Separation from parents gives the child the opportunity to think independently which in turn will increase a child’s self-esteem.
If you decide to send your child to a summer camp, try and factor your child’s age, interests and skill level, keeping in mind your budget and availability.
