Kids Fitness – Developing Life Skills

Kids fitness is about more than developing physically healthy habits in your children, it’s also about giving them the tools to be able to tackle mental and emotional challenges in life. Physical activity has been shown to increase academic performance and, especially when the activity is a team sport, can raise a child’s self-confidence and sense of belonging. Here are some benefits of kids fitness.

Benefits of Kids Fitness

  • Academically – we want our kids able to focus, achieve good grades and eventually establish a career that will support their lifestyle. A study conducted by the University of North Texas found that “Cardiorespiratory fitness was the only factor that we consistently found to have an impact on both boys and girls grades”. Kids who had a healthy cardio respiratory fitness routine (playing outside, running, swimming, biking, tennis, etc.) are able to process, retain and use information more easily than their sedentary peers.
  • Socially/Emotionally – Kids who are physically active, especially in a team sport, generally have more self-confidence, and are more adept at dealing with social situations. A study conducted in Switzerland found that kids who were consistently physically active “had greater well-being, including being better socially adjusted, feeling less anxious, and generally being happier about their lives”. Physical activity develops the emotional and social skills a child will need as they grow into adulthood.
  • Healthy living – As parents, we want our kids to live long, healthy lives. Starting healthy practices early will make fitness a part of your kid’s lifestyle, something that is as routine as brushing their teeth.

Look for local gyms and facilities that provides relevant programs for everyone in the family. Some gyms offer adult and youth sports leagues, fitness classes and even specialized kids fitness classes.

Looking for activities you can do at home? Going for a walk everyday after dinner as a family is a great way to start a healthy family bonding tradition. Meet up with other families for picnics that include tag games, hiking and exploration of the great outdoors. Focusing on being fit as a family is the easiest way to instill healthy, lasting habits in your kids.
