There’s a Group Fitness Class for Everyone: 5 Classes to Try

A little bit of self-care goes a long way! Exercise helps us stay healthy and happy. According to the CDC, most adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per week (or 75 minutes of higher-intensity aerobic exercise). In addition, they recommend that adults should also aim for two or more strength workouts per week.

We all know that being active is very important to our health, but it’s a lot tougher to actually make time for all of that activity when you have to juggle your kids’ schedules with work obligations, take care of your home, and spend time with your family. All this daily life stuff can really make it challenging to make time for exercise and eating right.

A group fitness class offers a solution to many of these challenges. A fixed schedule encourages commitment. It’s way harder to quit a class where you’ve made friends with the instructor and classmates than it is to skip “one” of your morning runs, which usually leads to skipping another…and another…

1. Yoga

Yoga comes in a lot of varieties, and because it’s so popular in the US, you can easily choose from many different types. All varieties emphasize strength, flexibility, and focus as you learn challenging poses. Most classes will incorporate some meditation, making yoga a great way to de-stress as well as exercise.

2. Bootcamp

That’s right, bootcamp. These classes are designed to push you and challenge you, just like you’re a new recruit in the Army (or…almost like it). Each one is different but they generally mix cardio and strength training, sometimes using body weight exercises and sometimes utilizing less traditional strength exercises like flipping tires. Bootcamp classes are great for people that want a challenging workout, need to mix up their routine, or enjoy being dog-tired when they leave the gym.

3. Zumba

Zumba’s official website describes itself as “dance fitness classes that are fun, energetic, and make you feel amazing.” Here’s a group fitness class that is both extremely fun and a full-body aerobic workout! You can expect that a Zumba class will incorporate both mid- and high-intensity aerobics, and of course, you get to dance!

4. Barre

Barre classes have become trendy pretty recently. These classes are based on ballet, emphasizing movements that improve your strength, balance, and flexibility. They are a nice change from the usual high-intensity aerobics or dance class and can be a really fun and interesting challenge.

5. Kickboxing

Kickboxing involves (as you might expect) kicking and punching, but whether you actually spar with others depends on the kind of kickboxing class it is. In the group fitness world, kickboxing is usually a high intensity aerobics class, choreographed to music. Kickboxing is fun, high-intensity and will keep those calories burning!
