So you’ve decided to give Zumba a try? Awesome! This group fitness class is a great way to have some fun and burn a few calories while you’re at it. If you’re not familiar with Zumba, here are a few basics to get you started.

What is Zumba?

Zumba is dance fitness. The dance moves are set to music, but you don’t even have to know how to dance to take a Zumba class. In fact, that’s why it’s so popular. Anyone can come, no matter their shape, size, or ability to dance. Zumba classes are not very strict, and having less structure lifts the pressure and allows you to learn and have fun at the same time. That’s why Zumba calls its classes “exercise in disguise.” You come to the class to get a workout, but you can take it at your own pace

What’s a Zumba Class Like?

Every Zumba class is different, so try a variety of styles and classes and see which one fits you.

Zumba is often set to latin music, though many instructors incorporate hip hop and pop music into their classes. Generally, Zumba is 4 repeatable moves, with some variations throughout. Classes are made up of all different kinds of people, who generally share the desire to take a fun break from their daily life. Zumba is very customizable and the intensity level is entirely up to you and how much you want to push yourself. You can expect to get your heart rate up and to get a really good aerobic workout during the class.

“I’m Too Uncoordinated for Zumba”

There are a lot of people that say they are too uncoordinated for Zumba. That’s just silly. No one is too uncoordinated for Zumba. For one, coordination is something that you develop over time by practicing it. Zumba is meant to be fun and relaxed while giving you a good workout. So don’t say you can’t dance or you’re not coordinated enough, get out there and try it out! After all, who doesn’t love an opportunity to shake off the day’s stress?
